#2 Visit 30 New places – Bodiam Castle

“Don’t neglect the gold in your own back yard.”
― Ben Okri

Sometimes we’re so busy exploring new countries, we forget about what’s in our own backyard or a  short drive away. Sometimes a staycation is exactly what you need to remember to take in what is around you.

2 hours after leaving London (rather then the one and a half as predicted by Google), we arrive at Bodiam Castle. Located in East Sussex, it’s close enough to London that it can be done as a last minute day trip. If you’re part of the National Trust tickets are free, otherwise it’s only £7.95 with gift aid.

I would describe the castle as a storybook castle. A moat surrounding the castle filled with water, looming turrets, and high castle walls. Then moving inside,  although in ruins, you can still imagine what it could have looked like had it not been left to crumble.

With some original features (like the holes they poured tar down, and tiles), lawn games and speakers dressed in costumes able to answer most questions, I was able to spend a couple of hours there exploring to my heart content.

What I would suggest doing , which we didn’t, is being a picnic and take full advantage of the amazing grounds around the castle. If like us to do forget, there is a tea shop beside the car park where you can buy hot food and sandwiches (and unless my eyes were deceiving me, a pub across the road which we didn’t check out.)

I’m adding this post to Emma, Kelly, Rebecca, and Mandy Travel Linkup this month: Staycations. Make sure you go and have a look at other staycation ideas!

Wow!! I had no idea about this castle and you’re right, it’s an easy day trip for those of us not too far from London – I’m definitely going to try and make a trip to see this – thanks for the tip!
